Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a man outside of a south Wichita motel.

Sedgwick County jail records show 31-year-old Christopher Daniel Kemmerly was booked at 10:30 p.m. Monday for first-degree murder and domestic violence battery.

The shooting happened Sunday evening in the 4400 block of South Broadway. Officers arrived to find the victim, identified as 34-year-old Justin Gaston, lying behind the Citi Host Motel. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Capt. Brent Allred said Gaston, Kemmerly and a 34-year-old woman were in a stolen vehicle in the motel parking lot when there was an argument and Kemmerly shot Gaston. Investigators believe the argument was drug-related.

Allred said the vehicle involved was reported stolen on February 11 and was found engulfed in flames in the 5500 block of South West Street about an hour and a half after the homicide.

The woman has not been arrested, but the investigation is ongoing. Allred said she was driving the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Kemmerly has prior convictions of criminal use of explosives, aggravated weapons violation, attempted aggravated arson, aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim, and criminal damage to property.

Kemmerly was paroled to Alabama in May of 2018, and his post-release expired in November.
