WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Crowds gathered at the Sedgwick County Zoo on Sunday to celebrate Cinco De Mayo.

It was a day spent by many taking in Mexican culture, heritage and music which could be heard all throughout the park.

Zoo President Scott Newland said it is another way of celebrating the rich cultures that are here in Wichita.

"We have you know big St. Patrick's Day parades downtown and there's other you know ethnic events around town." "Cinco for us just really fit," said Newland.

Catching a lot of attention Sunday were the folkloric dancers.

"That is our heritage, it comes from Mexico. This folkloric dancers was actually formed here and every event that we have you know they come out and support," said La Raza 102.5’s program director Adan Arredondo

Cinco de Mayo is not as big of a holiday in Mexico as it is here in the United States.

Some people are even confused about its meaning.

"Most people think that it's independence from Mexico and this is not Independence Day. We celebrate independence in September," said Maria Andrade who was out enjoying the day with her family.

Sunday, people celebrated winning the Battle of Puebla also known as the Battle of May 5, 1862, during the French - Mexican war.

Lots of food trucks lined up at Sunday’s event leaving many food and drink choices for everyone.

On the top of many lists were tacos and aquas frescas.
