AUBURN, Kan. (KAKE) - A 72-year-old man driving the wrong way on the Kansas Turnpike overnight was killed when his car crashed into an oncoming semi.

The incident happened at around 1 a.m. Monday on I-335 just southwest of Auburn in Shawnee County. That's southwest of Topeka. The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log states Michael Goering was northbound in the southbound lanes. A southbound Freightliner was unable to avoid Goering's Mercedes, and the two vehicles collided and caught fire.

Goering, of Topeka, died at the scene. The two people in the semi complained of pain, but the crash log doesn't state whether they were taken to a hospital.

Right after the crash, another vehicle, also a Mercedes, tried to avoid the tractor-trailer but rain into the back of the tractor unit. Four Wichita men in that vehicle were transported to a Topeka hospital, two with minor injuries and two with serious injuries.

It's unclear how Goering came to be driving the wrong way on the turnpike.
