WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police have taken a man into custody after he broke into an apartment and claimed to be armed.

Wichita police say a man ran from them after they tried to talk to him near Broadway and Indianapolis after acting suspicious.

Lieutenant Matt Lang with the Wichita Police Department said, "They were doing something suspicious, so as officers approached on foot to contact the two, one of them decided to run."

Officers followed the man to the 300 block of E. Indianapolis where the suspect broke into an apartment trying to escape officers. The man claimed he had a gun. Additional officers were called in and they set up a perimeter. The suspect then came out of the apartment with a kitchen knife and officers began negotiations. Parts of Broadway and Indianapolis were closed during the pursuit. While officers were negotiating with the suspect, Lieutenant Lang said he tried to cut through a fence with the knife.

Police used a less-than-lethal weapon to subdue the man and took him into custody. No one else was hurt.
