"Well you know it's tough, but I completely understood it," Wedge told KAKE.  "It's bigger than baseball, it's bigger than sports. This is real life."

Wichita State baseball saw a promising season come to a screeching halt when the American Athletic Conference made the decision to cancel all spring sports and championships due to the rise of the Coronavirus.

"They have a great opportunity to be the best version of themselves off the field and be a leader with their families with people they care about in the community," Wedge said he told the players. "Our kids are scattered now. They're back home, they're all over the country."

The Shockers finished their shortened season on a high note winning their last 12 games.

"I think we were surprising a lot of people," Wedge stated. I would have liked to have seen us get into conference play and compete because I think we would have held our own."

His first season as a college coach may have ended a bit differently than he imagined, but he says this year holds a lot of importance.

"I probably learned more here in the last 7, 8, 9 months than I have in my life and I've enjoyed that," Wedge said. "I'm surrounded by great coaches."

Eric Wedge also told KAKE his top priority right now is recruiting. Even though he can't physically leave campus and visit any of those prospects, he still wants to make sure he puts together a top tier recruiting class for the Shockers.
