A young man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy at a Wichita park last week.

Malick Garrett, 18, appeared in court via video and was charged with one count of second-degree murder. He remains jailed on $200,000 bond.

Officers responded last Wednesday evening to a shooting at McAdams Park in the 1400 block of North Ohio. They arrived to find 15-year-old Marion Wheaton suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He later died.

Investigators revealed that Wheaton and his 15- and 16-year-old male friends walked to the area to meet with another group of teens to allegedly fight over an ongoing dispute. As Wheaton and his friends entered the area, a vehicle approached.

Police allege Garrett and a 15-year-old male got out of the vehicle and Garrett fired multiple shots from a handgun, striking Wheaton. Multiple guns were recovered during the investigation.

Garrett's next court appearance was scheduled for November 27.
