Wichita detective Matt Young laid to rest after battle with cancer

A Wichita Police Department detective was laid to rest Saturday in Wichita after he died from stage four pancreatic cancer.

Matt Young's funeral took place at the Central Christian Church on 29th Street and Rock Road. The procession was down Rock Road to the north just past Bel Aire, before going east on Highway 254. The Wichita Police Department encouraged citizens to line the sidewalks for his procession, and the community came out to show their support.

"To honor one of the more stern and kind individuals that I've ever met in my life," said Felix Johnson, a resident that knew Young personally.

18-year-old Felix Johnson said seeing the procession go by hit close to home. He knew Young from his days in middle school and high school, where Young was a security guard. Johnson said he would even see him at all his athletic events.

"Every time my mom would run the ticket stand, she would have conversations with him, I would have conversations with him," he said.

According to Johnson, the memories didn't stop there. Young would teach him and his classmates in school lessons about law enforcement and the court system in our country.

"It was just really cool for us 12 and 13-year-old's to see a man with that much authority, to come down and be very, very kind to us, and just confident with us," Johnson said.

Dozens of residents lined the sidewalks down Rock Road with Johnson. One of them said when she watched the procession go by, it brought tears to her eyes because it brought back memories from when she went through the same thing with her dad, who was a fire chief in El Dorado.

"Six years ago, when I lost him, the community came out and lined his processional," Jamie Graham said, a resident on the sidewalk.

According to Graham, she understands how the family feels. She said she also understands what a loss like this means to a community.

"You've got one less hero out there fighting for you," she said.

So she came out to support the young family and the Wichita Police Department, just like her community supported her loss.

"To see people lined and know that they respected your dad, your husband, your brother, it means the world to the family," Graham said.

Matt Young was 49 years old and is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
