Man arrested for murder in deadly bar shooting

7:00 a.m. Sunday, October 6

Wichita police have arrested a man in connection to last weekend's deadly shooting at a bar near Pawnee and Oliver.

42-year-old David Pressley was booked late Saturday night into the Sedgwick County jail. He's accused of second-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old man Damario Cooks. 

Police have not released more information.

12:00 p.m. Monday

Wichita police have identified a 29-year-old man who was killed in a shooting outside a bar on the southeast side over the weekend. 

Capt. Brent Allred said Damario Cooks died at a local hospital early Sunday morning. 

Officers responded at around 12:30 a.m. to a shooting at Magoos Bar and Grill near Pawnee and Oliver. Cooks was not on scene, but he arrived by private vehicle at the hospital shortly after. 

Investigators learned Cooks and several others were involved in a disturbance inside the bar and it moved out into the parking lot where multiple people fired multiple shots. 

Police located one of the involved individuals at a home in the 1100 block of North Pershing. He was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Officers are working to located others who were involved. No arrests have been announced. 

Cooks was paroled in February after serving more than 10 years in prison for second-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery. 

Cook's death was Wichita's 22nd criminal homicide of 2019.

12:30 p.m. Sunday

Wichita police investigators say a disturbance inside a bar near Pawnee and Oliver ended with a deadly shooting early Sunday.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the bar in the 2300 block of S Oliver at around 12:30 Sunday morning, but the person who was shot had already left in a private vehicle for the hospital. That 29-year-old man died from his injuries.

"The preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim was inside the bar, and a disturbance occurred between several other males," stated Wichita Police spokesman Kevin Wheeler. "They moved into the parking lot, and multiple shots were fired, striking the victim."

Police say this was not a random incident, and investigators are still trying to find out exactly what happened. 4:34 a.m.

Police are searching for a suspect after a deadly shooting early Sunday morning in southeast Wichita.

Around 12:30 a.m., officers were sent to a shooting near a bar in the 2300 block of South Oliver – near Pawnee and Oliver. When they arrived, they found evidence of a shooting. A victim was driven to the hospital before police arrived, and had a gunshot wound. The victim is a man in his late 20’s or early 30’s; he died at the hospital, said Wichita Police Sgt. Brian Safris.

Investigators are hoping to look at surveillance footage from the area.

“We are following up with local businesses right in this area along with our investigation section, who has been called in to take over this investigation and interview some witnesses that we have,” Safris said.

Witnesses have cooperated with police, and Safris expects they will find more witnesses as the case moves forward.
