1st and 10 Preview: Wichita West

West High is trying to take the next step in the City League hierarchy in 2019.

The Pioneers finished 6-4 last year after a 1-3 start in large part to a brutal schedule which included the likes of Kapaun, Bishop Carroll, and Northwest in the first four weeks.

The schedule doesn't get a whole lot easier for West this season but there's reason for optimism.

West returns some experience. 13 combined starters are back.

The pioneers secret weapon could lie in the young guns who are making the move up to the varsity squad this year.

"Our freshman from last year were undefeated and I think they outscored their opponents 350-14 and now they're starting," said head coach, Weston Schartz. "So it is a new team we're very young. We'll start about 9 or 10 sophomores. They go out on the field they know what it takes. They practice hard, they've won a lot of football games. They played together in middle school so therefore they have a lot of camaraderie. They've been together, they know what each others strengths and weaknesses are. We're excited about that class."
