WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A woman charged in the decapitation death of her ex-boyfriend's mother is competent to stand trial, a judge ruled Thursday.

Rachael Hilyard, 37, is charged with first-degree murder in the April 2017 death of Micki Davis. A mental health evaluation Larned State Hospital found that Hilyard was competent and the judge agreed.

A motions hearing was scheduled for October 4. Trial was set to begin on October 15.

Police have said the 63-year-old victim was attacked after she went with her 9-year-old grandson to a home to get property that belonged to the victim's son. During the alleged assault, the boy was able to grab his grandmother's phone and run away.

Responding officers called for backup after finding Davis' decapitated body in the garage of the home in the 1400 block of West Rita. Hilyard was found hiding in the home.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Hilyard spent time on Community Corrections in Sedgwick County from September 2013 through May 2015 for convictions on four counts of drug possession.

Hilyard remains jailed on $550,000 bond.
