Woman safe after going missing in river

DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A woman is safe after going missing while kayaking on the Arkansas River.

Firefighters from Sedgwick County and other agencies were called around 10:30 p.m. Monday night to Derby after a man reported losing sight of his wife while they were kayaking on the Arkansas River between Derby and Mulvane. He reported she had last been seen holding on to a branch.

For almost an hour, crews searched both sides of the river for the woman.

"One of them fell out of the boat and the water was moving fast enough that the other couldn't get back to them," said Sedgwick County Fire Department Battalion Chief Ray Hensley.

Just after 11 p.m., the woman was found at a mobile home park south of Warren Riverview Park in Derby. Hensley said she was able to make it out of the water and walk up to a home.

Hensley urged people to stay out of the water when the water is high and fast, even if they were experienced.

"Mistakes happen," Hensley said.
