Wichita Sports Hall of Fame inducts 2019 class

The Wichita Sports Hall of Fame inducted their 2019 class on Saturday.

One of the inductees was Wichita native Evan Wessel.

Wessel was inducted after winning 9 championships as a two sport athlete at Heights and later as a basketball player for Wichita State. He spoke before the ceremony about being honored by his hometown.

"I got a letter obviously in the mail kind of announcing that they were going to be releasing it in a couple of days and it was kind of shocked at first," Wessel said. "I didn't think it would come this soon because I just think of the names that aren't in the hall of fame yet as far as the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame that I kind of made it ahead of so a little bit surprised but obviously very humbled by it. I played on some great teams. We won state football at Heights, three basketball championships and then obviously the championships at WSU so just being a Wichita kid just being here and having my family be able to watch me play high school and college you couldn't ask for much better sports career than that."
