ATCHISON, Kan. (KAKE) -

Police in northeast Kansas say a 3-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he found a gun and accidentally shot himself.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the 1100 block of Santa Fe Street in Atchison. Police Chief Mike Wilson told KCTV that the child fond the gun in a bedroom of the home. He was handling the firearm when it discharged, striking him in the abdomen.

The boy was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Kansas City for treatment. Chief Wilson said his injuries were serious, but the child is expected to be OK.

The investigation is ongoing.

Kansas has no safe storage law that would require specific measures to be taken by gun owners to secure their firearms.
