Three Kansas middle school students went the extra mile to ensure every girl at their school had a special Valentine’s Day.

Eighth-grader Tristan Valentine, seventh-grader Kyan Rice and sixth-grader Lincoln Holmes used hundreds of their own money to buy flowers for all 270 girls and 70 female staff members at Summit Trail Middle School in Olathe.

The three boys arrived early at the school Thursday with buckets full of carnations. They stood at the entrances of the school and passed out the flowers to every female in the building.

“We wanted every girl to feel important and special on Valentine’s Day,” Valentine said. “We worked hard to make sure it was going to be a surprise to everybody. I only told a few friends, and the girls seemed surprised and happy.”

Summit Trail principal Dr. Sarah Guerrero said in today’s cruel world, it was “refreshing to see three young men go out of their way to make others feel happy.” She also said it was a big boost to school spirit in Summit Trail's first year as a school.

“I got chills seeing it happen,” Guerrero said. “The ladies were so excited. It gives them something to look up to and feel good about themselves. It’s also what makes Summit Trail special.”

Rice said when Valentine proposed the idea to him, he was immediately in.

“I donated $100 of my own money,” Rice said. “I had the money from soccer refereeing. Tristan and his mom got the flowers Wednesday and brought them to school today. Lincoln and I got here early, and we started handing them out.

“We told them ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ and gave them a flower.”

Holmes said many boys told him they wished they had thought of the idea.

“One guy even tried to buy a flower for $5 from me,” Holmes said. “Summit Trail is a special school. And who knows, maybe we started a new tradition here.”
