Authorities say heavy rain has forced more than 300 people to evacuate their homes in the Kansas college town of Manhattan.

The Kansas City Star reports that the flooding started after nearly 9 inches (23 centimeters) of rain fell from Sunday night into Monday. Riley County Emergency Management director Pat Collins says at least 20 people were rescued from their homes by boat. City officials say about 750 homes remain without power.

Manhattan's Municipal Government Manager Mark Fehr described the flooding as a 500- to 800-year flood event during a news conference Monday.

Riley County Police posted aerial photographs showing building flooded nearly to their roofs. Two emergency shelters have been established to help those who were displaced.

Kansas State University's campus wasn't affected by the flooding.

Flooding is forcing some evacuations at Pratt County Lake.

Emergency crews have ordered an evacuation at an apartment complex near 6th and Country Club Road.

Crews also heading to West River Road to monitor conditions in the area. The Pratt Community Center,  619 N. Main, has opened as a temporary shelter.  

KAKE Meteorologist Tony Laubach said some areas received up to six inches of rain overnight. Laubach said showers and storms will continue Labor Day in areas that have already seen a lot of rain,  That trend should continue through midweek.

Riley County Emergency Management Director Pat Collins says they are helping those who wish to evacuate their homes along Wildcat Creek.  700 people have been displaced.   

Riley County police said they've made dozens of rescues, by boat and dump truck.  

Two shelters have been established,  one at Keats United Methodist Church, 3193 Keats Avenue.  The second at Pottorf Hall, 1718 Cedar Crest Drive.

Emergency shelters are being established at Pottorf Hall on the Riley County fairgrounds and at Bramlage Coliseum.
