Dad to be released from hospital after fire that killed daughter

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

An official with the Wichita fire department says a fire that killed a 2-year-old girl and left her father hospitalized is still under investigation.

It happened the morning after Thanksgiving in the 1800 block of North Lorraine, near 17th and Hillside. Aaliyah Renee died in the fire.

The girl's father was badly burned, but Lt. Jose Ocadiz said he was set to be released from the hospital on Monday.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, but family members say they believe faulty electrical started the fire inside the child's bedroom.

The family of Aaliyah Renee describes the 2-year-old as sweet and cute, this after the girl died in a house fire.

It was on Friday morning that firefighters made the grim discovery that a house fire in northeast Wichita turned deadly.

The family of the girl says she was spending the night at her father’s house and he tried to get her out once the fire was discovered but he could not after sustaining critical burn injuries.

“She was just so sweet, she always put a smile on my face,” said Leslie Knopick, mother of Aaliyah. “I didn’t believe it at first, that she is not here.”

Aaliyah’s family is traveling to Wichita to help with the girl’s tragic death. The family is now sustaining a financial hardship planning for the girl’s family. They have set up an online fundraising account.

“She was the sweetest little girl,” said Michelle Knopick, aunt of Aaliyah. “For the time she was here, we were so blessed to have her.”
