WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association is holding a walk next week and 5K to promote heart-healthy living.

The group is receiving $500 from our partners the DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers.

The American Heart Association events coordinator says the money will go toward helping high school students.

Janet Cervantes-Hageman says she nominated the group to help raise awareness of heart disease and strokes after the death of her husband. He died after a stroke went undiagnosed for more than 12 hours while he was in the hospital.

She says she believes more research could help save lives.

The American Heart Association Heart Walk and Fast 5K is June 18th starting at 8 a.m. at Wichita State University.
