Hundreds of cameras across Wichita are now focused on drivers, but do you know why?

Back in the early 2000s the city began installing cameras at intersections and now they've been installed at just about every major intersection in the city.

"I believe they're for when someone (runs) a red light," says Fernando Delgado.

Contrary to what some believe though, the city of Wichita isn't snapping pictures of car tags when a driver runs a red light, so police can issue a ticket. Officials with Wichita Public Works say the cameras are not streaming video, no one is monitoring the footage, and the cameras are not capable of recording video.

What the cameras can do, is sense if a car is waiting at a light. The cameras are there to keep traffic moving. Instead of waiting at an empty intersection for 60 seconds, the camera sensors shorten the wait time for the light to change green to 15 seconds.

The cameras and radars replace timers and eliminate the need to place sensors under the pavement.
