The senior out of Chapelton, Jamaica hit a top mark of 6.35 meters (20’10”) to claim the title. Simpson, who finished third in the event at the Jamaican Olympic Trials a year ago, was crowned the Jamaican Champion for the first time of her career.
Simpson must now chase the standard to qualify for World Championships in August. If she can match or top 6.75 meters (22’1.75”) by July 20, she will have the opportunity to represent Jamaica in the world meet to be held in Moscow.
DES MOINES, Iowa – It was a short day for Kansas at the USA Championships as the Jayhawks had only one athlete in competition. Sophomore Michael Stigler took part in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles Friday evening inside Drake Stadium. Stigler, who posted the ninth-fastest time in the preliminary round Thursday, didn’t have enough to advance to the event finals. The Canyon, Texas native rounded the track in 51.94 to finish eighth in his heat and 15th overall.
The Jayhawks will still have athletes in action in Des Moines this weekend. Andrea Geubelle will return to the runways Saturday, two days removed from claiming the American triple jump title, to compete in the long jump scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Paris Daniels will begin her meet with the preliminary heats of the 200 meters. The All-American will hit the starting blocks at 3:35 p.m. Follow all the action from the USA Championships by following on Twitter at @KUTrack and logging on to KUAthletics.com.
