The new league formed through the merger of the Champions Professional Indoor Football League and the Lone Star Football League will be called Champions Indoor Football, according to a source within the league.
Formerly the commissioner of the LSFL, Darlene Jones will serve as commissioner of the CIF, which expects to field either 14 or 15 teams with a 12-game schedule.
A formal announcement is expected later Friday evening.
One of the teams within Champions Indoor Football will be a new Wichita-based franchise led by local businessman Marvin Fisher and a team of investors.
Fisher announced his plans to form the team Thursday, but asked for patience in finding a team name and home arena. Former Wichita Wild head coach Paco Martinez accepted the coaching job and has begun the recruiting process which is expected to bring much of the Wild's former players back to Wichita.
The league source said at least ten possible league names were considered, but the consistency and simplicity of Champions Indoor Football won out.
