Wichita was unable to hold onto a two-goal lead Friday night, dropping their first road game of the season to the Bloomington Blaze 6-4 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Kevin Young led the way for Wichita with three points while Blaze forward Jon Booras had two goals and three assists. The two teams meet again tomorrow night for the last time in Bloomington this season.
Wichita struck first as Young sent a blast from the blue line just 49 seconds into the contest, giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The Blaze answered at 7:30 when Jon Booras got past a defender in the left circle, made a nice stick-handling move and beat Torrie Jung to tie it at one. Ian Lowe scored a power play goal at 14:54 to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. Wichita extended their lead with another power play goal at 16:50 when Chad Painchaud blew one past Pier Pelletier to make it 3-1. Bloomington would score the next three, all on the power play. The Blaze converted on a 5-on-3 man advantage as Jesse Dudas made it 3-2 towards the end of the first period.
In the second, the Blaze continued to find success on the power play. They took advantage of another 5-on-3 after Aaron Boogaard and Matt Tassone were sent to the box. Booras scored his second of the game at 3:40 and Nicholas Rioux gave the Blaze a 4-3 lead at 7:09.
Wichita would tie the game at four in the third period when Neil Trimm followed up his own shot and put home the rebound at 7:44. However, the Blaze took the lead for good at 9:16 as Tyler Gron's wrist shot beat Jung to make it 5-4. With a minute to go, Andrew Martens put one off the pipe that would have tied the game and the Blaze closed the door with an empty-net goal to make it 6-4.
Bloomington went 4-for-8 on the power play while the Thunder went 3-for-6. Young finished with a goal and two assists while Painchaud had one goal and one assist.
Wichita will take on the Blaze for a second-straight contest tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. To close out the road trip, the Thunder will head north to take on the Quad City Mallards on Sunday, October 28th at 4 p.m.
