SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Mike Maroth says he knows the Kansas City
Royals are looking for a left-handed starter.
Maroth won 25 games for the Detroit Tigers in 2004-2005 and says
he's at the Royals training camp in Arizona because of the
opportunity. He signed a minor league contract with the Royals with
an invitation to spring training.
Right-handers Gil Meche, Brian Bannister and Zack Greinke hold
the first three rotation slots, but Kansas City manager Trey
Hillman says he would like to have three lefties in the rotation.
Maroth is only 30 and has pitched six years in the majors, most
of them with the Tigers.
He had elbow surgery to remove bone chips in 2006. The Tigers
traded him to St. Louis last year, but he was 0-5 with a 10.66 ERA
in 14 games.
