Wichita State University students will pay more in tuition for a $33 million renovation project on campus.

Student leaders approved the project after a student survey. Fifty-one percent of students voted in favor of the upgrades, 49 percent against. The student government passed the measure in a 15 to 7 vote.

The project will be 100 percent funded by the tuition increase of $6 a credit hour.

"As when you own a home you know you have to do some maintenance," said Wade Robinson, University Relations. "We have reached that point and that's why it's a critical project for us."

The project will be funded over the next 15-20 years and will comply with Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, new heating and air, and 60,000 square feet addition, making the building size 220,000 square feet when it is completed. Construction is set to begin in March and be finished in about three years.
