A Wichita teacher says ''enough is enough'' when it comes to the heat, and offers a challenge to Wichita's superintendent.

The teacher is one of many who says it's just too hot for kids to learn.
The teacher, who didn't want to be identified, says the district needs to continue the half-days. She challenges the superintendent to come to a school that doesn't have air conditioning.

Wichita schools were on half days last week because of the heat. This week, they went to full days.

Temperatures in some Wichita classrooms climbed to the upper 90's. The third grade class at Allen Elementary has fans and water, and temperatures near 100. But teacher Chris Goldsmith says it's something you never quite get used to.

Goldsmith says, "We get hot and bored and we just try to keep busy so we don't do too much running around."

They do have air conditioning in parts of the school The library has AC, where they hold classes in shifts.

One educator at another school says no air conditioning means learning is impossible for the kids.

One teacher, who didn't want to be identified says, "One of our P.E. teachers went home because he was heat exhausted. So, that in itself, when an adult is having problems, what are we doing to our children."

But at Allen Elementary, there's some hope on the horizon. A new school will open next year.

Allen Elementary Principal Marilyn McFadden says, "Next year we've got the new school with air conditioning so, we just go with it this week. Tough it out and pray for cooler weather next week."

The district says it made the decision to go with full school days when the forecast called for 80 degree days this week. Even if it did continue half days, the district would have to make up the lost time at the end of the school year.
