A south-central Kansas school district plans to end the year a week early to save money.

The Buhler school board voted Monday night to end the year May 21 instead of May 27 as originally scheduled.

The decision needs approval from the teachers' union. Teachers would have to work the full contract year, but they would spend part of the time in professional development days that were scheduled for later in the summer.

Buhler officials say cutting the school year short will save the district an estimated $40,000.
