Mold is growing on countless books inside a Kansas college library.

The Bethany College Library in Lindsborg is shut down and officials don't know when the library will be re opened.

The college librarians noticed the problem months ago. The books were cleaned but the mold grew back.

School authorities say some students who did spend a lot of time in the library have had allergic type of reactions.

Samples of the mold have been sent for testing. This will help determine what type of mold has been growing in the library and will help authorities take the next step of getting it cleaned out.

Part of the mold problem has to do with heating and cooling. Apparently the library's temperature and humidity are too high causing mold to grow rapidly.

But the problem is being fixed. The ventilation system may need some work and there are questions about the quality of air circulation.

Students do have access to the online version of the library and the college is borrowing books from other colleges to help students start the school year right.
