Despite financial problems and budget-cutting, a renovation of the Kansas Statehouse is not on the chopping block.

Legislators authorized an additional $38 million in bonds for the 12-year project in the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, even as they were cutting spending elsewhere.

Legislative leaders note that the top-to-bottom renovation is almost three-quarters done and say it makes little sense to suspend the work.

They also said suspending the work could inflate the project's $285 million cost. Statehouse Architect Barry Greis said Tuesday that labor and material costs have dropped.

The last phase, due to start in 2010, is a renovation of the north wing and construction of a new basement-level visitors' center.
