Rep. Dale Swenson has switched from being a Republican to a Democrat.
He announced on the Legislature's opening day Monday that he was changing because he felt Democrats offered better solutions. His switch will gave Republicans a 76-49 margin.
The Wichita legislator is starting his 15th session. He said he contacted House Democratic leaders last week after growing tired of what he said was finger-pointing and blaming others by Republicans.
The switch comes as legislators start dealing with the state budget crisis, which includes making massive cuts in the current budget and the budget for the next fiscal year.
House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, a Stilwell Republican, said he was disappointed by Swenson's switch but respects his decision.
