Construction crews have begun the demolition of Bell Hall at Fort Leavenworth. The hall is the former home of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

A spokesman says crews began tearing down the building in recent weeks with the goal of having it razed and replaced with green space by the summer of 2009.

The building was first occupied in 1958 to educate the Army's majors, as well as a cadre of international officers. It was replaced by the Lewis and Clark Center in 2007.
