The U.S. military is reporting the deaths of four coalition troops in southern Afghanistan.

The troops died on patrol when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. An Afghan civilian working with coalition forces was also killed.

The military isn't releasing the troops' nationalities until families are notified.

Elsewhere, the military reports 16 militants died in a clash with Afghan and U.S.-backed coalition forces. There are no other reports of casualties.

Afghanistan's southern provinces continue to be Taliban strongholds wracked by violence. President Barack Obama is planning to send another 17,000 troops to bolster U.S. forces there.
