On Hatteberg's People, some things just weren't meant to die. I'm talking about Buster's Place in Sun City, Kansas, that's west of Medicine Lodge in the Gypsum Hills. After a rich history it had closed, but 15 months ago a Florida couple decided to open it again. Sally and Gary Goldman's friends questioned their sanity...moving from Orlando to Sun City, KS to open a bar.
(Sally) "Yes, and everyone in Florida thinks we're nuts, but it is a new adventure."
This is where they live...in the middle of Kansas' Gyp Hills....in the not so booming metropolis of Sun City.
(Gary) "We were ready to get out of Florida, we didn't know we were that ready to get out, but we were. No regrets."
Sun City looks like a tired movie set. But it had an appeal to the Goldman's. A friend purchased some land...and this historic bar....Buster's" and ask the Goldman's if they would be interested in running it. They were.
(Gary) "Everybody you meet is genuine, hard working people. It's just the way of life."
(Buster Hathaway) "I'm no legend, after all, I'm just Buster."
Sometimes even today, when the light is just right you can still see ol' Buster Hathaway standing behind the bar that he opened in 1946.
(Buster) "If there isn't any head on it, you don't get any taste."
He was an unforgettable character in so many ways.
(Sally) "We're just like a younger generation of Buster and Alma. I'm keeping Gary in line."
After Buster died in 1996 the place closed and the beer stopped flowing. For awhile, the beer stopped flowing. That changed when the Goldman's took it over and now customers are back.
(Gary) "There was a lot of different things that came together to put us here. I think we are where we are supposed to be.
In the kitchen Gary readies the beef for the noon crowd....and this is what the local's want. No chicken here...don't even ask.
(Gary) "We've got it now where we are working 'it', and 'it' is not working us. But it was very challenging when we came out here."
The bar has many of the original cast of stuffed characters.....watching over the diners in this little gyp hills oasis.
(Sally) "The bar stools with the brands on them, that's really neat. They (ranchers) come and sit in their stools they want and they are real funny about it. Sometimes they ask people to move, and they've been fine with it."
Their son Graham handles the bar...and those famous huge frosted mugs of beer that was Buster's specialty.
(Gary) "You know it's gotten to be home where we look forward to coming back."
(Sally) "Most of the time you don't see much.....mainly dust."
(Gary) "We love the country atmosphere....it's just peaceful."
(Sally) "It's a new adventure and I think it makes us feel younger."
