Tonight on Good Question, viewer Nicole had a question about recycling. Her trash service offers something called Recyclebank. She doesn’t have to separate anything. It all goes into one bin.
She wanted to know who separates the materials? Does Wichita have a processing facility and where is her recycled trash going? All are good questions.
Nicole’s trash service offers Recyclebank. All of her recyclables go into one bin. No sorting necessary. First, she wanted to know who does the sorting? This type of recycling is known as single stream recycling.
All recyclable material is compacted together. Then, it’s shipped off to a processing plant where it is sorted using systems designed to handle a mix of recyclables.
Nicole also wanted to know there is such a plant in Wichita. There is not a single stream processing plant in Wichita. Her trash service said the compacted material is shipped to other cities like Dallas, where such a plant exists. Because single stream recycling eliminates the sorting of things like cans from plastics, there has been an increase in recycling in the cities who offer the service.
