Grooming your pet can get very expensive, but a school in Wichita can save you money by teaching you how to do it yourself.

Whether you want to groom your dog at home or if you're interested in beginning a business, Kritter Kutters will teach you the tricks of the trade.

"It's the first and only in the state of Kansas," said Owner and President of Kritter Kutters, Kelly Gilbert.

This puppy-primping academy is the only dog grooming school in Kansas to have state accreditation.

"Where others, Petco, Petsmart, they do their training, their own training, I'm actually certified through the board of regents," Gilbert said.

Kritter Kutters School of All Breed Dog Grooming has a curriculum that consists of a ten-week course, where students learn the ins and outs of dog grooming. And, just like any school, this one also includes tests - five throughout the course.

Students learn about bathing practices, techniques for different hair styles and safe handling of pets.

"Nine-tenths of the course is really about the safe handling of the pets while they're in our care," Gilbert said.

While certification is not required to practice grooming in Kansas, it does give individuals some credibility as they begin their grooming careers.

Trisha Thayer has dreams of owning her own grooming salon, and was relieved she wouldn't have to travel far from her home in Derby for her education.

"I am so happy that it's here in Kansas in the Wichita area," Thayer said. "That way I don't have spend a lot of money on room and board going to Oklahoma or another state."

Just like beauty schools, services are offered at a reduced rate. But a new change allows dogs to walk out with more than just a hair cut.

"I wanted to be able to offer affordable products for their pets and also a friendly atmosphere," Gilbert said.

Awhh's 4 Paws pet shop offers natural products with an easy to maneuver layout. It's a one stop shop for your four-legged family member.

The cost of attending the school is $1,000. It opens at 7:30 Tuesday through Saturday and is located at 9420 W. Central Road. Services start at $32.00.

The retail side will soon be offering obedience training as well.
