Tattoos might sound like a good idea at the time you're getting them, but for some, eventually the ink can become unwanted.

A new shop in Wichita can make those tattoos not so permanent anymore. It's called Original Skin, and the tattoo removal business uses a new type of laser treatment to get rid of unwanted ink, and they claim it's the safest and most effective way to remove a tattoo.

Nick Harbert decided to ink a tribal tattoo on his wrist when he was eighteen.

"To be completely honest I don't even remember what it means anymore," Harbert said. "It was kind of on a whim."

Now at age 24, he is beginning his professional career and wants the symbol of his youth removed.

"I just don't think it's as appropriate as it probably was at the time so I thought it was time to get it taken care of," Harbert said.

Harbert found Original Skin, a shop that brings a service to town that was previously hard to come by.

"There aren't very many places that do tattoo removal," said Certified Laser Tech Jo Ellen Parson-Evy. "And I don't believe there's any place that uses the type of laser that we use."

Instead of the usual method of removing tattoos via laser heat, the treatment offered at Original Skin uses light and energy.

"What it does is breaks up the ink, and then the natural body systems carry the ink away," said owner and manager of Original Skin Bob Lida. "That means there's less instances of scarring and it's not as uncomfortable taking them off."

Nick says that while the treatment was painful, the pain was only temporary.

"I don't know if you've ever had a wart burned off or anything like that, it's a really intense heat kind of," Harbert said.

He will require a couple more treatments before his tattoo is gone for good.

More than one treatment is usually required depending on location, the age of the tattoo, the colors used and how well it was applied.

But in the end, it takes care of something that at one time would have been permanent.

"You used to think if I put it on there it's there forever, but that's not true anymore," Lida said.

The store also offers the same treatment on age spots. Because they're nothing more than pigmentation, the technology works the same. Usually, removing age spots only takes one treatment.

Original Skin is located at 3300 n. Rock road.
