Electronic billboards shine light on gangs

Wichita, Kan. -- Crime experts say warm weather brings out an increase of gang activity, something experienced already in Wichita this summer.

Wichita Crime Commission Executive Director Gordon Bassham says, "Typically when the weather gets warm, that's when the gangs come out to play."

And it's when the Crime Commission revives their 'Gang Free Wichita' campaign using electronic billboards to shed light on the gangs.

Bassham says, "The reason the billboards are up and running right now is because there's been a lot of gang activity recently drive-by shootings, homicides and a lot of gang activity in the summer anyway. So it only made sense to put up the 'Gang Free Wichita' billboards as a way to call attention to gangs and help the public understand there's a way to fight them."

He wants parents and children to go to their website 'gangfreewichita.org' and learn how to recognize the signs of gangs. The hope is parents will be familiar enough to notice any signs that their own children might be getting involved in gang activity in time to divert them.
