Police have a new weapon to catch criminals.

The Wichita Police and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Departments are now beefing up the Crimestoppers system hoping to get even more tips to help solve crimes.

The Crimestoppers line will now have a person answering the phone 24/7 and tipsters can now start texting their tips in.

Before, if someone called during the off hours they would usually get a voicemail. Law enforcement worried that because of that they missed out on important tips.

"We don't want them to have the opportunity to rethink. We don't want them to hangup and think about it because the time 9 a.m. arrives they might think they're concerned about being involved in this situation and that we can't afford to let happen," said Crimestoppers President John Todd.

Since this new system started just last week an overnight tip has already led to the arrest of a fugitive.

The Crimestoppers tip line is 267-2111.

You can now text in a tip to CRIMES then type tip217 plus your message.

All tips to Crimestoppers are anonymous.
