Chiefs Linebacker Jovan Belcher Kills Girlfriend, Self

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City was placed on lockdown after an apparent murder-suicide involving a Chiefs football player Saturday morning.

Investigators said 25-year-old linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, in the 5400 block of Crysler around 8 a.m.

He then drove to Arrowhead Stadium, where he turned the gun on himself as two team officials were confronting him. Belcher was pronounced dead shortly after.

The couple has a 3-month-old child together, KMBC reports.

The season has been a massive disappointment for the Chiefs, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title.

But they're just 1-10 and mired in an eight-game losing streak that has been marked by devastating injuries and fan upheaval, with constant calls the past few weeks for general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel to be fired.

The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
