A man and woman are dead after an apparent murder-suicide in rural Barton County.

A child called 911 to report a shooting around 8:30 Tuesday night in the 1600 block of Northeast 20th Avenue, north of Hoisington.

When deputies arrived, they found the bodies of a man and woman. A child was also at the residence, unharmed.

According to a preliminary investigation, deputies believe the woman was shot at close range, and the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

They have been identified as 35-year-old Justin Heggemeier and 39-year-old Michelle Heggemeier.

The shooting remains under investigation.
