Police in west Wichita are posting themselves outside schools, looking for people parking illegally and writing tickets when they have to.

Police say when parents park illegally they're putting children in danger.

In west Wichita, police say they have seen the biggest parking problems at Hadley Middle School. They see violations like double parking.

“Instead of pulling to the curb, they pull up next to a car that's already at the curb and let their children out,” Officer Laurie Kimrey said.

You also can't park on the opposite side of the street from the school, in no parking zones, and within 20 feet of a crosswalk.

Officer Darren Williams has written several tickets since the first day of school, for all of those violations.

“One of the main things is you just let them know which violation they've done wrong. I've had a lot of people tell me that they don't know that it's a problem, they didn't know it was a violation,” Officer Darren Williams said.

Besides being illegal police say parking violations are dangerous for students who have to cross traffic, to catch their ride.

“I wish there was an answer you know, I don't want somebody to get hurt before they realize it's a real big issue. Hopefully, the education and citations will work for the rest of the school year,” Officer Kimrey said.
