The Wichita City Council unanimously approved the $557 million operating budget for 2014.
A net total of 13 full time positions are budgeted for elimination and could result in layoffs. Staff said they will work to minimize that as much as possible, but bargaining union contracts will largely dictate the layoff process.
"We don't want to see any layoffs or anything of that nature. We don't know whether there's really going to be any layoffs," said Mayor Carl Brewer.
Another highlight of the budget is an increase of $2 in the tipping fee charged at the City's Construction and Demolition Landfill. The fee will be $34.
"We have a significant amount of debris that is generated by our normal activities, city activities," said City Manager Robert Layton. "If it fills, then we'll be forced to go to other facilities that are much more expensive."
The budget also includes a short term delay in the 2014 Wichita Police recruit class by three months, reallocation of fire resources at Stations 2, 22, and 38, and eliminating one division chief position which is currently vacant. These fire and police department changes will save nearly a million dollars.
