WICHITA, Kan. (WBJ) — Slawson Cos. is moving toward further development of its NewMarket Square along the Maize Road corridor.
The commercial and residential development company has purchased 73 acres on the southeast corner of 29th Street North and Maize Road. That’s across Maize Road from where Target is in NewMarket Square and across 29th from where the new Sam’s Club opened on July 17.
“It’s a great piece of Maize Road frontage,” says Jerry Jones, vice president of commercial development for Slawson Cos.
He says the land is ideally suited for additional restaurant and retail development, though it’s too soon to know specifically how the land will be developed.
“We’re working on doing our planning right now,” Jones says. “Maize Road has been a very desirable restaurant and retail corridor.”
He says some of the land is in a flood plain and may have to be elevated before any development can occur.
Jones says Slawson will be working with the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Water Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the process.
Some of the land is a habitat for birds and water fowl. Jones says Slawson will emphasize habitat protection through its development planning.
Slawson purchased the land, including the roughly 10-acre Cadillac Lake there, from the Pracht family.
That family has owned and cultivated the land since the 1920s, Jones says.
“They have been great stewards of the land,” Jones says.
With the land, NewMarket Square likely will grow to around 200 acres.
Jones says the existing NewMarket Square accounts for 120 acres along the Maize Road corridor between 21st and 29th streets north. Slawson doesn’t own all of the land, though, having sold some properties to the businesses that now operate in NewMarket Square.
