Tree branch fall kills Kansas man, injures another

Two rural Lyon County men were attempting to extinguish a grass fire after a lightning strike when a branch fell on them.

EMPORIA, Kan. — A Kansas man is dead and other injured after a tree branch fell on them Monday morning.

KVOE News in Emporia reports that a lightning strike caught a tree on fire north of Roads 197 and M in rural Lyon County around 9:30 a.m. Monday. After the strike, two men went over to the tree to extinguish a grass fire that had started underneath it.

That's when a large branch fell from about 30 feet up and hit both men.

Gary Fuller, 49, was transported to an area hospital and soon after pronounced dead. Kenny Fuller, 89, was taken by private vehicle to an area hospital after initially refusing treatment at the scene. His condition is unknown.
