A 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition after Wichita police say he accidentally shot himself in the leg. It happened just after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Murdock Street and Hydraulic Avenue.

Officials say the teenager was walking alone down Murdock Street when the gun, which he had tucked into the waistband of his pants, accidentally discharged. A passerby saw the teenager had been hurt and called 911.

Police say the bullet struck the teenager's left leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Charges are pending against the teenager because he does not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Police have taken the weapon as evidence.
