Staff from the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) Wichita Regional Office have established emergency offices in the Oaklawn area of Wichita and in Derby to provide replacement food benefits for individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who were impacted by tornadoes and violent storms over the weekend.
The Oaklawn location will be open from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. in the Oaklawn Community Center at 2937 E. Oaklawn, Wichita, 67216. The Derby emergency location will be open from 8-10 a.m. and from 5-7 p.m. in the Derby Recreation Center at 801 E. Market, Derby, 67037. These locations will be open at least through Wednesday, depending upon need.
Clients who lost their food due to tornado activity or power outages following the storms will be able to apply for up to one month of replacement SNAP benefits. Their benefits will be available for their use if they have their card or if they come down to get a new card once they have a permanent address or location.
Replacements for lost Vision cards may be obtained at the SRS Wichita Regional Office, 230 E. William Wichita, 67201 or individuals may call 1-800-977-6666 toll free,
“We are moving as quickly as possible to help those who were affected by the violent storms Saturday,” said SRS Secretary Phyllis Gilmore. ”We are doing what we can to help these families, and, thankfully, most of those we are seeing still have shelter. They’ve just lost their food supplies.”
SRS Wichita Regional Director Diane Bidwell said, “SRS is pleased to be of assistance to those persons qualifying for benefits. We have staff in place in the area most significantly impacted by Saturday's storm.”
