The Cold War created a construction boom in Kansas in the early 1960s. A KAKE News crew took a tour of an Atlas Missile silo. Salina's Schilling Air Force Base was home to the 550th Strategic Missile Squadron. There were 12 concrete and steel silos from McPherson to Abilene.
Stored inside were Atlas missiles, with warheads one hundred times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.
The Kansas missile silos were active until 1965.
Two of the missile silos in Kansas are being converted into survival condos. You can tour them if you have proof you can purchase a unit. The smallest units go for $1.5 million.
