WICHITA, Kan. — A bicyclist who was hit by a train last week in south Wichita has died.
It happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Monday, June 23, just east of Pawnee and Hydraulic. Police say a man in his 50s was riding his bicycle to work when he was hit by a train. The man was carried 60 to 75 feet from the point of impact.
Police confirmed he died Tuesday morning.
Wichita Police Sgt. Brian Sigman said last week they don't know why the man didn't see or hear the Santa Fe train. They're trying to determine if he possibly had a hearing impairment, or if he may have been listening to music.
A BNSF railway crew member said they believe the man was riding his bike around the train gates, which were down at the time he was hit. They ran follow-up tests to assess the safety of the crossing -- a standard procedure following incidents like this.
His identity has not yet been released.
