A woman and her dog are dead after they were hit by a truck on a southwest Sedgwick County road Wednesday night.

The accident happened around 9:15 p.m. on 167th Street West near 55th Street South.

According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, a truck was southbound on 167th just north of 55th when he came up on a couple walking their dog.

He tried to swerve away from them but ended up striking the 52-year-old woman and her dog from behind, killing them instantly.

The woman's husband was not injured, nor was the 28-year-old driver from Wichita.

Deputies said it does not appear that speed or the fact that the accident happened on a dirt road played a role in the accident, but the investigation is ongoing.

The woman's identity has not yet been released, but deputies say she did live nearby.
