HAYS, Kan. -- A Colorado man died when the car he was driving hit an embankment after a brief police chase in Hays.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says 34-year-old Gerad F. Madrid of Colorado Springs died in the crash early Thursday.
Police were searching for Madrid briefly after he was seen driving without headlights and going the wrong way on a one-way street. Officers say the car also nearly struck a patrol car. The officers pursued the car with their lights and sirens on.
Madrid was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was in ran a stop sign and ran into a canal.
Hays police say they later learned the car also had been stolen.
A man is dead following a crash during a police pursuit in northwest Kansas.
Just after 2 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Hays police officers in the 800 block of Ash Street saw a Buick LeSabre going the wrong way on a one-way street without headlights. They tried to stop the car after it almost hit one of their patrol cars.
The driver refused to stop and a pursuit began. The suspect turned onto 5th Street but because the car's headlights were off, police believe he didn't see the canal at 5th and Milner. He crashed into the canal at a high rate of speed and struck the east bank.
He was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
The pursuit only lasted about one minute before crash occurred.
No one else was hurt. Officers later determined that the car he was in was stolen.
