WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita police have released new details after a man was killed in a service elevator accident Friday morning in Old Town.
Emergency crews were called to the 100 block of North Rock Island shortly before 10:30 a.m. That's where Key Construction is in the process of renovating a building in the area, converting it into apartments.
According to Wichita police, a 41-year-old worker was riding in an open-door, pulley-style service elevator. While it was going up, police say the man became ill, and then his head was crushed by the elevator's counterweight..
The man was pronounced dead at the scene from a head injury. Police say he worked for a company called Restoration & Waterproofing, subcontracted by Key Construction.
"A freak accident," said Lt. E.J. Bastian. "Never seen anything like it in 30 years."
There was only one other construction worker in the building at the time. Police say the others were on break.
