Pop. Pop. Pop.
At about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Tabitha Thompson and James Fulfer heard the loud popping noises as they sat in their bedroom.
"We heard three gunshots at first and then an additional five," Thompson said.
At the sound of the gunshots, Thompson and Fulfer rushed from their back-room bedroom to their front door to see what had happened outside along South Prairie Park Road.
"We saw a silver car speed off toward Lincoln and there was somebody laying in the street," Thompson said. "We could see blood all around him."
They say about six young people were outside in the 1100 block of S. Prairie Park trying to help the young man. Thompson says at least one of them was screaming and crying.
Thompson and Fulfer both called 911.
They say with the chaos it felt like an eternity before police and an ambulance arrived at their neighbors' home.
"(First responders) found a citizen who had been shot multiple times, there were other citizens there who witnessed the shooting and they were rendering aid," Sgt. Dan Oblinger said at the scene.
Neighbors say they've heard the 20-year-old girl had invited the people over while her parents were out of town. But somehow, the gathering took a violent turn.
Officers said at the scene that there were multiple people involved in an altercation. At least one person had a semi-automatic handgun and fired shots.
Police did not discuss what the altercation was about or the motive for the shooting.
"The lab recovered six .380 shell casings and four .40-caliber shell casings," Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said Sunday afternoon.
Police say the 20-year-old male victim had five gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was listed in serious but stable condition Sunday afternoon.
Police say he has been "very uncooperative" with officers.
But neighbors had plenty to say in the hours after the shooting.
Thompson and Fulfer say the shooting scene is much too close to home.
"(It's) 50 steps from where our baby slept in her crib (in the front room)," Thompson said.
Thompson and Fulfer say they'll move their one-year-old's crib given their sense of security has been shattered.
"It's crazy," Thompson said. "And we thought this was a good neighborhood."
